A full sized billiard
table is always a challenge to play on. Not for the
faint hearted these 12ft x 6ft tables are suitable for
Snooker and Billiards as well as all variations of these
games.
We have 4 billiard tables clothed in traditional green
which are mainly used for Snooker games.
Snooker is a game played
on a full sized table with a set of balls that includes
15 reds, 1 yellow, 1 green, 1 brown, 1 blue, 1 pink
and 1 black as well as a cue ball. Each non-red ball
is worth a different amount of points, and a red ball
is worth 1.
The general concept is
that you are supposed to pot first a red ball and then
a coloured one, then another red and another colour
and so on. Red balls stay down, coloured balls come
back up so you can play them again later. Once all the
red balls have been potted the coloured balls are played
and as they are potted they remain off the table. If
you are on a red ball you must sink a red to continue.
If you are on a colour you must sink that particular
colour to remain at the table.
Obviously there is more to it that just that but next
time there is snooker on Sky you may understand why
they do what they do.
The ultimate goal in snooker
is to achieve the "maximum break". This involves
potting a red ball then a black ball (its worth 7 points),
then another red and another black etc until all the
reds are gone, then potting all the colours in their
order until the score adds up to 147. Obviously you
are meant to do this without missing once. Its a tough
call but not impossible and has been achieved by many
snooker greats over the years.
Billiards is a game involving
significantly less balls. In fact billiards is played
with only three, two of which are white. One white ball
has a small black spot on it. The third ball is red
and the object is to pot or bump particular balls to
achieve a point score that relates to the particular
combination. Its not an easy game to learn or even to
understand but it is still commonly played around the
clubs in New Zealand and a National Championship is
held every year.
