Pool Anyone ?

Dunedin Cue Club has 4 8ft and 2 9ft International pool tables suitable for 8-Ball, 9-Ball and any variations.

New Zealand's most commonly played cue sport is 8Ball, either World Rules or Pub Rules. World rules are generally played at the Cue Club although it is up to you what rules you play. If you don't understand World Rules you can always ask for some help.

9 Ball is a pool game that is played with the first 9 Balls and the cue ball. The objective is to sink the 9 Ball and the player that legally does this wins. The catch is that you have to hit the lowest numbered ball on the table first to make a legal shot. Rules, and help on the rules, are available.

International tables have larger balls than all other cue sport tables and as such you need special equipment. Thick tipped cues are used as they achieve greater push over a larger area of the ball, helping it to run straighter.

A 9 foot International table makes for a fun game of pool. Our tables are covered with Simonis cloth for fast response and an ultra smooth surface. These tables are among the most common International tables and are both challenging and rewarding to play on.

8 foot International tables offer a much different style of game play than the 9 foot table. The balls have more opportunity to cluster together requiring a more strategic approach to free them but the potting of the balls is generally much easier. Suitable for both 8 Ball and 9 Ball these tables suit people of all skill levels making for a fast game for advanced players and a more satisfying game for beginners.

Snooker

A full sized billiard table is always a challenge to play on. Not for the faint hearted these 12ft x 6ft tables are suitable for Snooker and Billiards as well as all variations of these games.
We have 4 billiard tables clothed in traditional green which are mainly used for Snooker games.

Snooker is a game played on a full sized table with a set of balls that includes 15 reds, 1 yellow, 1 green, 1 brown, 1 blue, 1 pink and 1 black as well as a cue ball. Each non-red ball is worth a different amount of points, and a red ball is worth 1.

The general concept is that you are supposed to pot first a red ball and then a coloured one, then another red and another colour and so on. Red balls stay down, coloured balls come back up so you can play them again later. Once all the red balls have been potted the coloured balls are played and as they are potted they remain off the table. If you are on a red ball you must sink a red to continue. If you are on a colour you must sink that particular colour to remain at the table.
Obviously there is more to it that just that but next time there is snooker on Sky you may understand why they do what they do.

The ultimate goal in snooker is to achieve the "maximum break". This involves potting a red ball then a black ball (its worth 7 points), then another red and another black etc until all the reds are gone, then potting all the colours in their order until the score adds up to 147. Obviously you are meant to do this without missing once. Its a tough call but not impossible and has been achieved by many snooker greats over the years.

Billiards is a game involving significantly less balls. In fact billiards is played with only three, two of which are white. One white ball has a small black spot on it. The third ball is red and the object is to pot or bump particular balls to achieve a point score that relates to the particular combination. Its not an easy game to learn or even to understand but it is still commonly played around the clubs in New Zealand and a National Championship is held every year.
